Why Malaysian websites underperform in search

An SEO audit checks whether search engines can crawl, understand and trust your website, and whether it answers the searches your customers actually make. A good audit ends with a ranked list of fixes, not a score. For Malaysian businesses, it also has to cover bilingual content, local listings and how AI search tools describe you.

Most of the sites we audit look fine to their owners. The problems sit underneath, and Google doesn't send an error message when it stops ranking you. Traffic just never arrives.

In Malaysia, the same handful of issues come up again and again:

  • English and Bahasa Malaysia pages that compete with each other because hreflang is missing or wrong, so Google picks the weaker version.
  • Sites on a .com domain with no clear signal that they serve Malaysia, or hosted far from Malaysian users so mobile pages load slowly on local networks.
  • Google Business Profiles for branches in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor or Penang with an address or phone number that doesn't match the website or the directories that list the business.
  • Product pages outranked by the same products on Shopee or Lazada, because the marketplace listing has more reviews and better structured data.
  • Service pages that never name the cities or states the business serves, so they don't qualify for local searches.
  • Pages that AI Overviews and ChatGPT can't quote, because the answers are buried in sliders, tabs or image text.

None of these are hard to fix once you know they're there. The audit is how you find out, in order of what costs you the most.

What you can expect from a Mackyclyde SEO audit

47 Audit Checkpoints

The full audit reviews all 47. The free audit covers the highest-impact ones.

6 Audit Categories

Technical, on-page, content, authority, local SEO and AI search visibility.

2 Business Days to Deliver

Free audit in 2 business days. Full audit in 5. Counted from when we get access.

100% Actionable Findings

Every issue has a severity rating and a fix instruction. Nothing is flagged without a way to resolve it.

What our 47-point SEO audit covers

Every audit uses the same 47 checkpoints, grouped into 6 categories. Here's what each category checks and why it matters.

Technical SEO

12 checks

A technical SEO audit checks whether Google can crawl, render and index the pages that matter on your site. It covers sitemaps, robots.txt, canonicals, redirects, page speed and Core Web Vitals. If a page can't be crawled or indexed, nothing else on this list helps it rank.

  1. Crawlability and crawl budget use
  2. XML sitemap validation
  3. robots.txt configuration
  4. Indexation status and conflicts (noindex, blocked, excluded pages)
  5. Canonical tag configuration
  6. Redirect chains, loops and broken links (404s)
  7. HTTPS and mixed content
  8. Core Web Vitals and page speed, mobile and desktop
  9. Mobile rendering and usability
  10. JavaScript rendering (can Google see the content without running scripts?)
  11. Structured data validation
  12. Log file analysis (where server logs are available)

On-Page SEO

8 checks

An on-page SEO audit checks how each page tells Google what it's about: title tags, headings, meta descriptions, URLs, images and internal links. We map every important page to the search it should rank for, so two pages aren't fighting over the same keyword.

  1. Title tags
  2. Meta descriptions
  3. Heading hierarchy (H1 to H3)
  4. Keyword-to-page mapping and intent match
  5. Internal linking and orphan pages
  6. Image alt text, file size and format
  7. URL structure
  8. Content depth compared with the pages that currently rank

Content and search intent

7 checks

A content audit checks whether your pages answer what people are actually searching for, in the language they search in. It finds thin, outdated and duplicate pages, topics your competitors cover that you don't, and pages that cannibalise each other.

  1. Topical gap analysis against your top 3 competitors
  2. Keyword cannibalisation
  3. Thin and duplicate content
  4. Search intent alignment (informational vs commercial vs local)
  5. Content freshness
  6. E-E-A-T signals: named authors, credentials, sources, company details
  7. English and Bahasa Malaysia targeting, including hreflang

Off-Page & Authority

6 checks

An off-page audit looks at who links to you and what they say about you. It checks the quality and relevance of your backlinks, flags spammy links, and compares your authority with the competitors ranking above you in Malaysia.

  1. Backlink profile overview
  2. Toxic and spammy link detection
  3. Anchor text distribution
  4. Referring domain quality and local relevance (.my and Malaysian sites)
  5. Link growth over time
  6. Unlinked brand mentions

Local SEO

7 checks

A local SEO audit checks whether you show up in the map pack and local results when people nearby search for what you sell. In every Mackyclyde audit, 7 of the 47 checks cover this: Google Business Profile per branch, NAP consistency across Malaysian directories, and city service pages.

  1. Google Business Profile audit, per branch
  2. NAP consistency across your website, profiles and Malaysian directories
  3. Local citation coverage
  4. Review volume, rating and response rate
  5. LocalBusiness schema and areaServed markup
  6. City and state service page coverage (e.g. Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor)
  7. Map pack gap against local competitors

AI Search Optimisation

7 checks

An AI search audit checks whether Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini can find your content, quote it, and name your business when someone asks about what you do. It covers AI crawler access, whether your pages contain short answers that can be lifted as a citation, and whether your business details are consistent wherever AI tools look.

We test AI visibility with SE Ranking's AI tracking, our internal tool and CiteCheck, the AI search checker extension we built in-house.

  1. AI Overview and AI Mode presence for your priority searches
  2. AI crawler access (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended)
  3. Answer extractability: short, quotable answers in the page HTML
  4. FAQ, Organization and Service schema coverage
  5. Entity consistency: business name, address, services and claims across the web
  6. Brand mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answers
  7. Featured snippet eligibility

Sample page from a MackyClyde SEO audit report
Page 1 of a sample report for a Malaysian F&B chain (name withheld), from a live crawl on 12 October 2026. The site scores 82 out of 100, yet still has no XML sitemap, 20 duplicate title tags, and only 49 of its 2,148 referring domains are Malaysian.

A health score on its own doesn't tell you much. This site scores 82, which sounds fine, but Google has no sitemap to work from and 20 pages share the same title. The priority matrix puts those first because they're cheap to fix and affect the most pages. That ranking is the part a free tool won't give you.

How much does an SEO audit cost in Malaysia?

A Mackyclyde SEO audit is free for the highest-impact checks, and the full 47-point audit starts from RM 3000. The final price depends on the size of your site, how many locations you have, and whether you need English and Bahasa Malaysia versions checked. You get a fixed quote before we start.

Across Malaysia, one-off SEO audits are usually priced between RM 1500 and RM 5000, with large e-commerce sites and migrations at the top end. A lower price usually means an automated report with no prioritisation. Ask any provider how many checks are done by hand and whether you get a ranked fix list.

Free SEO audit tool vs agency SEO audit: which do you need?

Free tools are a reasonable first check. They tell you something is wrong. They rarely tell you which problem is costing you customers, or what to do about it.

Case study: how a technical SEO audit brought a Malaysian hotel group back into Google

A Malaysian hotel chain group lost almost all of its Google visibility in mid-2023 because its React website stopped serving indexable content and page-level meta tags to Google. Our technical SEO audit traced the cause, the fix went live in October 2023, and impressions began recovering within days.

What happened

For eight months the site was steady, at roughly 75 to 150 clicks and 10,000 to 15,000 impressions a day from Google. Then, in late June 2023, both lines fell off a cliff. By early July, clicks and impressions were close to zero, and they stayed there for over three months.

Nothing looked broken to a visitor. The pages loaded and the booking flow worked.

What the audit found

The site was built in React and rendered its content and meta information in the browser. Google was receiving pages without the indexing signals and page-level title and description it needed, so it started dropping hotel and room pages from the index. To Google, those pages had nothing to rank.

What we fixed

  • Made sure the robots directives, canonical tags, titles and meta descriptions for every page were in the HTML Google receives, not added later by JavaScript.
  • Checked rendered output page by page with the URL Inspection tool until Google's view matched what visitors see.
  • Resubmitted the affected pages for indexing.

The result

Within days of the fix going live in October 2023, daily impressions went from close to zero back to around 7,000. Indexed pages recovered over the following two weeks, and clicks rose to 210 a day by Janaury 2024.

if your site runs on React, Vue, Angular or another JavaScript framework, check 10 (JavaScript rendering) and check 4 (indexation status) are where problems like this show up first.

SEO audit FAQs

What is an SEO audit?

An SEO audit is a check of your website's technical setup, content, local presence and backlinks to find what's stopping it from ranking on Google. Ours also checks whether AI tools like Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT can find and quote your site. You get a ranked list of fixes, not just a score.

How much does an SEO audit cost in Malaysia?

Our free SEO audit costs nothing and covers the highest-impact checks. The full 47-point audit starts from RM 3000, depending on site size, number of locations and languages. You get a fixed quote before any work starts.

Is the free audit really free?

Yes. No payment, no card and no contract. You get your highest-impact issues and your AI search readiness score in 2 business days. If you want the full audit after that, it's your call.

What's the difference between the free and the full audit?

The free audit covers the highest-impact checks from our 47 checkpoints and tells you what's wrong. The full audit covers all 47, adds a keyword gap analysis, competitor benchmark and priority action matrix, and includes a 30-minute walkthrough call.

How long does an SEO audit take?

The free audit takes 2 business days and the full audit takes 5, counted from when we receive access to Google Search Console and GA4. Very large sites (over 10,000 pages) may take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.

What do I need to provide?

Your website address, plus viewer access to Google Search Console and GA4 if you have them. For the local SEO checks, tell us which Google Business Profiles belong to you. We never need your website admin password.

Do you audit for AI search, like AI Overviews and ChatGPT?

Yes. AI search visibility is one of the 6 categories, with 7 checks. We test whether Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini can access your site, quote your pages and name your business for the searches you care about.

Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit?

ChatGPT can explain SEO issues and review a page you paste in, but it can't crawl your whole site, see your Search Console data or check your backlinks and Google Business Profile. Use it for quick questions. Use a proper audit when you need to know what's actually holding your rankings back.

Do you audit Bahasa Malaysia and bilingual websites?

Yes. We check English and Bahasa Malaysia pages separately, including hreflang, which version Google shows for each search, and whether the two versions compete with each other.

Do you audit WordPress, Shopify and other platforms?

Yes. We audit WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify, Wix, Webflow and custom-built sites. Fix instructions are written for your platform, so your developer can act on them directly

Can you audit React and other JavaScript websites?

Yes. We compare what visitors see with what Google receives, page by page, and check that titles, meta tags, canonicals and indexing directives are in the server HTML. We fixed exactly this problem for a Malaysian hotel group whose React site had dropped out of Google's index.

How often should I audit my website?

Once a year for most business sites, and before and after any redesign, platform change or domain migration. If traffic drops suddenly, audit straight away.

How is this different from a free tool audit?

A tool gives you a list of warnings. We review all 47 checkpoints by hand, decide which issues are actually costing you rankings and customers, and rank the fixes by impact and effort. See the comparison table above.
